Milan - getting around town

If you are planning to drive around town remember that most attractions are concentrated around the city centre which doesn’t make it too practical.

Trams are by far the quickest and most pleasurable way to get around central Milan. The city has had these streetcars since the 1920s, and the bright orange, single-car trams with their dark wooden interiors and ornamental light fittings can still be seen chugging around the historic centre, although the newer jumbo trams are becoming more common.

Milan also has a small three-line subway system called Metropolitana. The subway stations are easy to spot with a bold “M” on the street.

The same tickets are valid on trams, buses and the metro, even if you combine two methods of transport, for up to 75 minutes. You can buy tickets at most tobacconists and newsstands (look for an ATM logo on the window). You can also buy tickets in the self-service kiosks in the subway.

Milan’s white taxis are fairly priced, but you’ll find it almost impossible to hail one on the streets. Look for taxi-stands in one the city’s large piazzas or order a cab by phone (+39 02 4040).
