Milan - introduction

The truly cosmopolitan city of Milan or Milano; the richest and second largest city of Italy and capital of Lombardy

Situated on the flat plains of the Po Valley, the city derives its name from the word “Mediolanum” which means “mid-plain” or "in the midst of the plain", courtesy of its location in a plain close to the junction of two small rivers, the Olona and the Seveso.

The Celtic tribes of Bituriges and the Aedui are credited with the foundation of Milan. The Bituriges and the Aedui bear the emblems of a ram and a boar; therefore Milan’s symbol is a wool-bearing boar. This could explain some scholars’ belief that the other possible translation of “Mediolanum” could be “half wool”.

The modern Milan is however symbolic of all pleasures of the world – gastronomy, shopping, fashion, art and culture, theatre and cinema and a happening clubbing scene. And while worldly pleasure reigns, the city also boasts of an very significant religious heritage.
